Light Painting is a super fun idea! Photographers who are looking for photography ideas that can be done from home. You can use a variety of objects to create different effects. You should definitely try this one for yourself!
If you haven’t heard of light painting before, it is when you use a light and a very slow shutter speed and create different patterns and designs with the light. You can use a flashlight, led lights, or even your phone. There are endless options for light painting and it is great to do at home.
Tools You Will Need
- a camera that has manual mode ( most of them do )
- a flashlight or phone that you can use
- tripod for your camera
- a remote trigger
the set up
For these shots, I had my camera on a tripod and the watch positioned on a piece of black acrylic. The acrylic is from Neweer and is from Amazon!
Firstly, set up your composition the way you want to. I kept mine simply by having the watch on a piece of black acrylic.
the settings
Next, you want to use a higher aperture (f stop number) to make sure everything is in focus. f16 was used in these images. I took a few test shots with my light still on to make sure everything was in focus.
Take a shot with your lights still on to get exposure for the watch face incase your need it in post.
Change your shutter speed all the way down. I lowered mine between 1 second and 3 seconds and just adjusted my aperture if it was looking too bright.
Now for the fun part!
If you are using a flashlight when you start your long exposure you are going to want to wave the light around and behind your subject to create the effect. You probably won’t get it right on the first try ( I definitely didn’t!) but do not give up. Keep playing around with angles and timing.
If you do not want to use a flashlight you can use your phone to create the effect too! That is what I used to create the wave effects. What I did was go to google and type in red background and find an image you like. I made it full screen and waved my phone in different directions and used different speeds as well.
Most importantly have fun doing this! It is definitely not meant to be perfect so keep experimenting until you find something you like.
